British Dressage Loses Mike West

(British Dressage) – It is with great sadness that we announce that Mike West passed away peacefully on Tuesday 6 March, after a five year fight against multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. Mike was one of dressage’s leading commentators and also a long-time friend of British Dressage. He was involved in many of our top shows.

Mike, and fellow commentator Cris Howard, worked together at a lot of the major shows and many people referred to Mike as ‘the voice of Hickstead’.
In addition to Hickstead, Mike commentated at the National Dressage Championships for many years as well as Frys, Hartpury and Soley Farm CDIs. He also always enjoyed the BYRDS Under-25s Festival at Sheepgate, many Premier League Shows and the Wellington Freestyle to Music Championships.

“Mike will be fondly remembered by so many as ‘the voice of dressage’. He worked on countless top shows, so if you weren’t lucky enough to meet him, you certainly would have heard him,” says BD’s chief executive Amanda Bond. “His distinct voice and in-depth knowledge of all things dressage bought a great professionalism to many shows. It is a sad loss to dressage and he will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

There will be a Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for Mike on Tuesday 20 March at 3.15 at St. Paul’s Church, Langton Road, Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 8XD and afterwards at the Spa Hotel, Tunbridge Wells. Family flowers only but donations always welcome to Myeloma UK or Hospice in the Weald.
