| The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is quickly approaching, and with so many exciting events coming up, it is hard to pick just one to focus on.
The show begins Thursday, May 21 with Junior Weekend, featuring some of the top up-and-coming riders in the nation.
The belief at Devon is that, “The Tradition Continues,” and there is no better chance to see
that then when the Junior Hunters, Jumpers, and Equitation events take place. Many of them started in the Pony Hunters, and we hope to one day see them in our main events, including the 2015 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon, and the USHJA International Hunter Derby.
The Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon on Thursday, May 28, will feature the stars of show jumping, and is a magical night for our horse show. It is made even more special when you see riders like McLain Ward, Beezie Madden or Lillie Keenan, who started their careers at the Devon Horse Show, now competing at the highest level of the sport.
The professional hunter divisions are also always special because they are the best in the country, and riders work all year to prepare for this event. The USHJA International Hunter Derby adds an extra flair, because it gives the riders the opportunity to showcase their hunters in a little different way, and it is always exciting for the audience.
Devon is not just a hunter/jumper event though, and another personal favorite of ours in the Four-In-Hand Coaching division. We have nine coaches and they are
from all over North America. We have to say, it’s pretty cool to see all nine in the arena at Devon.
It’s not just about competition at Devon either; it’s about recognizing all different aspects of the equestrian industry. We have a great variety of exhibitions this year, beginning with Rachel Jackson during the first weekend. The Shetland Pony racing are always huge on Sunday and Monday. The last three nights will feature carriage racing, which is a hybrid of combined driving, but it’s done in the ring against the clock with some hazards and some cones. The final Saturday we have a Dressage Quadrille, which we think the audience will really enjoy. And finally, Friday and Saturday nights the show will feature a special presentation by the Fralinger String Band.
There will be a lot happening during the ten days of the Devon Horse Show, but we are very excited for it to all come together and watch some of the best athletes in the nation compete in the historic Dixon Oval. Hope to see you soon!
