Wellington Riding: Premier League preview

A host of international riders will be gathering at Wellington Riding, Hants this Thursday 6 – Sunday 9 June for the fifth Premier League of the 2013 season.

Top FEI judges will be in attendance including Paco Guerra from Spain, FEI Dressage Judge General Stephen Clarke, Jennie Loriston Clarke and David Trott, plus many experienced national judges who will be kept busy with classes running from Young Horses to Grand Prix.

The Gala Evening on Saturday includes the Wellington Riding Prix St Georges to Music Championship, now in its 25th year. Pony, Junior and Young riders are also ‘dancing to music’ to try and win one of the £100 training vouchers on offer.

The evening starts at 6.30 pm but early arrivals can also watch the Grand Prix which is running from 3.20 pm. Tickets are still available from 01189 326 308.

There will be young horse classes for 5 and 6 year olds, and the Pony Riders gather for their selection.

Interesting to note: Top names including Daniel Sheriff, Dan Watson and Hannah Biggs will be contesting in the four year old and five year old classes. In the Prix St Georges young ladies’ favourite Charlie Hutton goes on his own nine year old gelding Don Dino – the first time at that level for the 17.1hh chestnut who last competed at Advanced in March, winning his class. Fresh from Compeigne CDI3* success and a call up for the Rotterdam Nations Cup Team is Warwickshire based Gareth Hughes who goes in the Intermediate I on Judy Firmston-Williams’ 11 year old mare, Aramis T.

Interesting to note: Entries to the young horse classes include; Daniel Watson, Charlie Hutton, Paul Hayler and Hannah Biggs. Laura Tomlinson’s stable rider, 24 year old Lara Griffith, will go in the Advanced Medium on Dr Bechtolsheimer’s 17hh Oldenburger gelding Kristjan. Lara has been competing the horse since May 2012 and they were last out together in May this year – winning the Advanced Medium 98 test at Hunters Equestrian on a score of 67.11%. In the PSG names include; Matt Hicks, Emile Faurie, Paul Friday, Matt Frost, Lesley Peyton-Gilbert, Charlie Hutton and Laura Tomlinson. Laura will ride her father’s nine year old mare, Unique III. ‘Minnie’ has only competed once before – at Abbey Dressage earlier this year, winning the Advanced class on 75.63%. In the Inter II names include; Matt Frost, Paul Hayler, Hayley Watson-Greaves, Zoe Sleigh, Henry Boswell, Rebecca Hughes, Harry Payne and Jacky Stolper.

Interesting to note: In the Advanced Medium test, pony rider star Phoebe Peters will be riding Laetitia Van Der Wyck’s ten year old 16hh gelding Delfiano. Phoebe rode the german bred horse at Addington Premier League in May, where she finished fifth in the FEI Junior Team Test. Henry Boswell, Jacky Stolper and Matt Frost will all ride in the Grand Prix. In the first Premier League Pas De Deux, 19 year old Group 4 rider Sarah Thomas will perform with 26 year old Group 3 rider Beth Bainbridge. Sarah, who is from the Eastern region, rides her own 15 year old KWPN Korenbloem Middlemarch, while Central region member Beth will be on Jill Walker’s nine year old Dimaggio mare, Dream Girl SC.

Interesting to note: Youth team tests take place throughout Sunday, with the Pony Team Test from 1.40pm acting as the final selection trial for places on the 2013 European Team – the successful riders will be announced next week. In the PSG big names on the circuit will include Matt Frost (who goes twice), Maria Griffin, and Paul Friday. Lara Griffith goes on another of Dr Bechtolshiemer’s horses, this time the 11 year old Hann gelding Rubin Al Asad, known as Rufus to his friends. The pair posted first at Abbey Dressage in the PSG back in April this year.
